Dr. Javier Briones is the leader of the research group "Cellular immunotherapy and gene therapy" at the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute and the Sant Pau Research Institute and head of the Haematology Service of Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau. Dr. Briones' group has led to the creation of the first CAR-T30 in Europe for patients with classical Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a disease that affects 3 out of every 100,000 people according to data from the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology. In fact, Sant Pau is one of the very few centres authorised in Spain to produce advance cellular medicines. In addition, a novel CART19 with memory T cells is also being tested in a clincial trial for patients with refractory non-Hodgkin B cell lymphoma.
